Shen, Jay | back

Dr. Shen teaches undergraduate and graduate HCA courses on the US health care system, health economics, managerial epidemiology, and health planning. His research interests have focused on disparities including access to care and outcomes/quality of care of racial/ethnic groups, uninsured and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, as well as health economics including health insurance and outcomes, resource consumption and efficiency, public health including obesity and diabetes preventions, and comparative health systems. He has secured several grants including a research grant awarded by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Department of Health and Human Services, to examine racial disparities in hospital care. He was an entry of the National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation Health Care Research Award in 2001. He has published book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles on health disparities, health outcomes and quality, health services research, and public health. He frequently presents his research at meetings of Academy Health, American Public Health Association, and International Health Economics Association. He was a grant reviewer for the National Institute of Heart, Lung, and Blood, National Institute of Health, and the National Science Foundation of New Zealand. He is also a reviewer of scientific journals including American Journal of Managed Care, American Journal of Public Health, Journal of General Internal Medicine, Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, Medical Care, Progress in Community Health Partnerships: Research Education and Action , and Stroke .
