School of Public Health Curriculum Meeting Minutes
November 3, 2005  

Graduate Studies Committee Meeting 11-03-05

Members present: Dick Papenfuss, Chuck Moseley, Shawn Gerstenberger (Chair)

The first agenda item for the Graduate Studies Committee was to meet and discuss the bylaws for this committee; a proposed version of the bylaws was circulated prior to the meeting.

The committee made modifications to the document and voted to approve it and sent it along for faculty review at the next meeting. (a revised version of the bylaws is attached).

The second agenda item discussed was the new MHA proposal submitted by Dr. Moseley from the Health Care Administration and Policy Department. The document was discussed, minor editorial changes were suggested, and the committee recommended that the MHA be increased to 42 credits to meet CEPH accreditation criteria. The committee then voted to approve the MHA proposal.

UNLV School of Public Health Graduate Studies Committee Bylaws
  1. Authority - The Committee functions under authority of the School of Public Health Bylaws ; in particular, Section 3.1.2.1.6 of the Bylaws.
  2. Membership – Membership is determined by Section 3.2.3.6 of the School of Public Health Bylaws . Each academic unit of the School of Public Health shall elect one representative to serve on the Faculty Review Committee. The chair shall be the graduate coordinator for the SPH, and will be the representative of that academic unit.
  3. Meetings

    3.1 The Committee will meet each semester (including summer) to review applications for admissions, or to evaluate student graduate appeals as needed. The Chair may call additional meetings at other times when necessary to consider new policies, procedures and awards.

    3.2 The Chair or a designee shall take minutes at each meeting. Minutes shall be distributed to committee members and stored in the Dean's office.
  4. Committee Functions – As provided for in section 3.3.1.6 of the School of Public Health Bylaws , the Committee is responsible for the following functions:

    4.1 The Committee shall develop admissions criteria, academic separation and probation guidelines and appeal processes as needed. The Committee shall review and recommend changes to the current SPH policies (eg-capstone experience) to keep consistent with current Graduate College policies and procedures as needed.

    4.2 Review applications and make recommendations regarding student admissions to the MPH program.

    4.3 Review new graduate program proposals

    4.4 Award Graduate Assistantships for the MPH program

    4.5  Provide the SPH and Graduate College with materials needed for program review and evaluation

    4.6   Assist with CEPH accreditation to ensure academic rigor as needed.

    4.7 Address interdisciplinary issues associated with the administration of the MPH program

    4.8   Other duties as appropriate.
  5. Committee Voting:

    5.3. The Committee chair will make every effort to schedule meetings so that all committee members can attend. If a committee member is unable to attend a scheduled meeting, the member shall contact the chair and submit their vote(s) in writing.

    5.4 A quorum shall consist of two-thirds of the voting faculty members of the Committee.
